Translation and localisation

The German novelist, playwright, and Nobel laureate Günter Grass described translation as “that which transforms everything so that nothing changes.” But there are different levels to such “transformations”, and I will work with you to determine the best approach: something closer to a word-for-word rendition, or something involving more extensive adaptation to the target culture.

Bilingual revision

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) defines translation revision as the “bilingual examination of target language content against source language content for its suitability for the agreed purpose.”

Based on your language preferences and feedback (for example on terminology, style, tone, or register), I provide a comprehensive quality assessment of a translation’s accuracy, comparing it against the original text and including in-depth checks of grammar and syntax.

I provide bilingual revision services in all of my translation language pairs.

Monolingual review

The ISO defines review as the “monolingual examination of target language content for its suitability for the agreed purpose.”

Here, I offer a four-eyes check of the translated text, to ensure readability and that it works as a standalone piece of writing. As far as possible, the idea should be for your target readers to be unaware that the text is a translation.

I provide monolingual review services in British and American English.

Why work with me

Past and present clients of mine include independent artists and their agents, galleries, museums, musicians, publishing companies (for a range of literary genres), and several NGOs, but I never simply deal with words on a page. To me, the translation process is a dialogue, and one in which I do most of the listening: Your satisfaction is my priority, so I aim to produce writing that is respectful of your content and faithful to your tone and message, while being guided by the words you’ve entrusted me with.

“Our assistant senior editor in charge of testing considers Matthew to be one of Watching America’s “elite team,” and I could not agree more. Matthew has consistently produced sophisticated translations that add immensely to our homepage. He is reliable in meeting translation deadlines and provides immediate and enlightening responses to requests for clarification on the rare occasions editors need his help. I believe Matthew would be an asset to any group or individual that enlists his skills, as he is to Watching America.”
